Do you ever get stressed
out? There are some of you who might not
have a clue as to what that feels like, but others of us are well-aware of the
feeling. If you are one of the non-stress
folks, you might dismiss the feeling and even offer a bit of biblical advice, “So
do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:34).
I realize that is not only good advice, it is also godly advice; but
that may be easier for some than others.
So what can we do to temper those stressful moments? Here are a couple thoughts:
- ·
When you start to feel the pressure of stress – go find
something to take your mind off of the stressor. It might not alleviate the problem, but it
might divert (and calm) your mind for a bit.
- ·
Stay away from reminders of the stressor. For example if you are waiting on word about
something that might or might not happen, limit the number of times you check
your email or texts. Not knowing may not
solve all the problems, but it might help avoid adding layers to the anxiety.
- ·
Save the stress-reactions for those issues that really are important. If we fret about everything, we might be too
emotionally worn-out to address the things that matter the most.
- ·
Pray for peace. When we
can’t calm down on our own, sometimes a quick prayer can help solicit the
Lord’s help and remind us we aren’t fighting this fight alone.
One more thing – but this
one is for those who aren’t anxious. If
you live with, work with or socialize with an anxious person, do your best to alleviate
their anxiety. Some suggestions are to
answer their questions promptly, be specific when giving instructions and
remind them that no matter how the situation plays out, you will be there to
support them when it is over.
