Over the last couple of years, I have learned a lot about science – well, maybe not a LOT, but more than I knew before. One of things I am learning is the difference between the terms “pandemic” and “endemic”. While I am nether a linguist nor a scientist, I get the feeling that during a pandemic, we are compelled to try to confront the issue, while moving into an endemic situation, we just accept it and learn to live with it. When we move into an endemic stage we accept the inevitable. While, within our current context, you might read the preceding paragraph and think I am discussing COVID, but that’s not my point – at least not at this time. As I thought of advancing endemic stages, I got to thinking about violence. It might be tempting to look at violence – in particular homicide, assaults and robbery – and feel that they are so ingrained in our world that we just have to accept them.
