There are a lot of good, old fashioned words that have fallen out of vogue – one of which is “folly”. I mean, when was the last time you actually heard someone use the word “folly”? For those who might not be too hip on this seemingly archaic word, folly is defined as something that lacks good sense or normal prudence and foresight. A similar word is “foolishness”. Folly and foolishness describe things that just don’t have a whole lot of wisdom. The reason for this journey back in time is a proverb I came across the other day that states, “The foolishness of man ruins his way, and his heart rages against the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:3). The wise man of the Old Testament cut right to the core of much human struggle by pointing out that we make life tougher than it needs to be when we do silly or stupid things.
