In yesterday’s thought, I mentioned a phrase my parents would periodically use on us, “I am not asking you to do this, I am telling you to do this.”. A parallel thought was, “I don’t care if you want to do it, do it anyway.”. No, my parents were not bullies or tyrants – they weren’t even mean; however, they had in mind a way that we are supposed to be raised and they were committed to making it happen. I will not say that we always followed willingly, but I do believe that my sister and I were raised in a way in which we became decent people and productive citizens. Now, the reason I bring this up is to circle back around to something that Jesus said to His disciples early on, “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. If anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat also.
