If you are somewhere near
retirement age, you probably know exactly where you were on this date in
1969. After centuries of dreaming and
years of planning, humans finally landed on the moon and then, not long after,
walked on the lunar surface. As a child
of the “Space Race”, it was a big deal at our house. This moment fulfilled one president’s dream
and mankind’s quest.
The nuance of reaching
the moon has lost some of its luster in the last few decades, but as I look
back on it, it is still incredible. Even
using today’s technology, it would be impressive – but imagine doing it with
what we had on hand at the end of the 1960s.
It took insight, desire, creativity, perseverance and a sense of mission
to pull it off! Now, that leads us to a
question for the 21st Century – what do we need today to make the
earth a better place? We have conquered
the moon, now what should we be doing to make the most of this planet? We are miles ahead of where we have ever been
in knowledge and technology – just imagine what we could do if we put our heads
together!
Let’s be willing to dream
and then go out and do. Who knows, maybe
this collaboration will literally (and figuratively) help us reach places and
emotions that send us “over the moon”.
