If you have ever visited Yellowstone National Park you probably remember the signs that are scatted around the park, especially in the areas of the geysers, which instruct visitors to “stay on the path”. Bubbling up from below the earth’s surface is hot water that has the potential to scar people and, if exposed to enough of it, it can kill. Those signs which remind us to stay on the path are there to keep us safe. When people follow that advice they are typically safe, but when they venture off the path, there is danger. The other day, as I was reading from the biblical book of Proverbs, I was reminded of these warning signs. The sage of the Old Testament noted, “The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it.” (Proverbs 22:3).
