Our congregation will be celebrating our seventieth anniversary in a couple of years, so we have decided to start working on an historical keepsake. As we begin this process, I have noticed a couple of things. First, I have been alive during most of the church’s history. While I didn’t live in Southern Maryland for most of the history of this church, I was living through it in other places. When I look at some of the “old” photos and see my contemporaries wearing the same style of clothes I wore, it makes me feel ancient. Yet, maybe the most sobering aspect of the review is the number of people who are no longer with us. Some of them have moved away, but many of them have “moved on” to a new life. While it is tempting to feel sorry for those who have died, it is also tempting to feel sad for us. We no longer have their wisdom, kindness or friendship.
