For those of us who are old enough to remember it is hard to believe that the Challenger space shuttle tragedy was 39 years ago. Growing up in the 1960s I have always been fascinated by the space program. Interestingly, while I would hold my breath with the rest of the world when our space travelers would go silent around the backside of the moon, I always anticipated success. (I was too young to remember the tragedy on the pad in 1967 that killed three astronauts.) The Challenger explosion and the 2003 disintegration of the Columbia were stark reminders of the dangers of space travel. Great discoveries carry great risks. I don’t want to come across as calloused but the more we push the envelope the more uncertain we can be of success.
