When Thomas Jefferson penned the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” it appeared that he was setting out on a journey that was unique. Our Founding Fathers tried to forge out of a caste-based society something that resembled a democracy which sought to treat people equal. No, they didn’t accomplish this quest in their lifetime, but we have to give them credit, they tried to set in motion something that would work for the benefit of mankind. Interestingly, these words from the 18th Century were not the first time this concept had been professed. In fact, the idea was promoted centuries before this among God’s people.
