If you have been around public schools in bigger cities, there is a chance you have come across a school name in honor of Horace Mann. Mann, a 20 th Century American, wasn’t your typical hero, but his influence on American education is substantial. With school starting around the country, I thought it would be fitting to quote the Father of American Education; however, this one is not necessarily about traditional education. As Mann considered his fellow man he observed, “Doing nothing for others is the undoing of ourselves.”. Not only is this statement insightful, but it is also far-reaching because it is true from an individual or a social perspective. Whether we apply it to each one of us or all of us, social apathy derails us.
