The other day I came across an interesting saying that I’d never heard before, “You must lose a fly to catch a trout.”. While this does have some practical application to anglers, there is a deeper message to this axiom. We may have to be willing to sacrifice superficial things to gain our true goal. Successful fly-fishers need to be willing to lose a fly if it means catching a fish and successful people must be willing to let go of self-centered characteristics to accomplish their goals. We have to be willing to let go of pettiness, selfishness, greed and grudges to build the kind of relationships that will make life worth the living. Sure, it is easy to hang on to negative emotions if we never hope to achieve what we set out to do in life, but if we hope to make the most of our opportunities we must keep an eye on the bigger picture.
