Are we easily offended? If so, why? It seems like these days it is becoming so easy to be offended. We can’t disagree without taking what the other person says personally. There seems to be less good-natured ribbing for fear that we will hurt someone else’s feelings. It seem like was are just so thin-skinned that we take everything too seriously. We wear our emotions on our sleeves and when something is said that we could possibly take offense to, we do – and we get our feelings hurt. I believe this is popular in today’s society, but it also appears that this has been a challenge throughout history. In fact, the wise man of Ecclesiastes observed its presence in his time. He warns, “Also, do not take seriously all words which are spoken, so that you will not hear your servant cursing you. For you also have realized that you likewise have many times cursed others.” (Ecclesiastes 7:21-22). Maybe the best thing we can do to become less offendable is to tune some other people out.
