Like most people, one of my favorite passages is the 23rd Psalm. There is just something so comforting about David’s poem that features a trip to a peaceful pasture and an invitation to a royal banquet. As both a shepherd and a king, I imagine David was quite familiar with being at peace and being honored. While the whole psalm fills my soul with spiritual hope and peace, there is a passage that I have come to appreciate as much as any of the images, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. (Psalm 23:4). As I reflect on the picture David paints I can imagine walking through a dark, treacherous place filled with natural hazards as well as the hidden dangers of the enemy.
