One of my favorite statements of the Bible comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” (Matthew 5:10).  There are several reasons I like this verse, but I have to admit that anything that will align me with our Heavenly Father is a pretty noble pursuit.  I think that, inherently, most of us understand the value of making peace, but as I pondered  this a few days ago, I thought of a couple specific examples.  Maybe the most important way God made peace was when He completed the process of forgiveness.  When we sin, we are at odds with Him, but through His mercy and His Son’s sacrifice we can be restored to a peaceful relationship with Them.  Additionally, the Lord has established a way that all kinds of diverse people can enjoy a peaceful co-existence.  We don’t have to look alike nor do we have to agree on everything to be able to live in peace.  When we embrace God’s worldview of the innate value of human life, peace will be the norm not the exception.

Let’s set out to do everything we can to be more like God.  While obedience to His will and His Word are the primary ways we can become closer to Him, let’s also put forth our best effort to make peace.  When we set this as a priority, we’ll be able to enjoy the prize He has laid out for us.

Do you wish we could get back to those carefree days of days gone by?  I say that with a bit of tongue in cheek because I don’t know that I can ever remember any “carefree” days – either collectively or personally.  There have always been issues that have occupied our minds and, personally, we all have our problems.  While I think there are some people who might get closer to being carefree than others of us, I would imagine that even they have issues that occupy their minds. There are a lot of reasons to have trouble relaxing and going with the flow, but I believe that one of the most common ones is that we are too afraid of making mistakes to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle.  There are a lot of us that are wound-up pretty tight because we don’t want to mess things up.  Even those who aren’t perfectionists by definition struggle with anything close to a laze faire mentality.  It’s not enough to give it our best shot, we want to do everything well. There are times I read some of my thoughts and I wonder if people think that I have lost touch with reality.   I am a big believer in trying to talk as much as possible about things like love, peace, hope, unity and optimism.   There are times I look back over what I wrote and I ask myself, “Am I trying to convince me or you?”.   Am I writing about these topics because I believe in them or just because I want to believe they are possible?   The other day, I came across a statement made by the Apostle Paul in one of his letters in which he wrote, “Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you.” (Philippians 3:1).   As I reflected on this passage, I got to wondering if Paul may have been catching some flack over his message of hope and joy.   In the book of Philippians, he continually encourages his readers to rejoice or find joy in the lives they are living.   ...
