Are you looking for a description of humility?  Throughout history – and even in our lifetimes – there have been people we would consider humble.  Yet, as I look back in time, one of the ones who impresses me as much as any is John the Baptist.  You might wonder how a guy this famous (and historic) as John could fit into the category; but it is in an understanding of humility.  My favorite definition of humility is a true view of ourselves.  Humble people know who they are and how they fit in with those around them.  John was a pretty popular guy on his own.  People were flocking to him and he was having a religious and moral impact on his generation.  Yet, when we compared himself to Jesus, “He said, ‘I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the Lord,” as Isaiah the prophet said.’” (John 1:23).  He could have a rock star, but compared to the Messiah, he was just a guy proclaiming the good news.

Being humble doesn’t mean that we underestimate our value, it just means we are aware of where we fit.  Let’s make the most of the talents we have – and shine a light on others as they use theirs as well.  When we do what we have been called to do, we can be a part of something that can become the best it can be.

I grew up in a faith tradition that asserted there are five acts of worship that should be conducted during our worship services: singing, praying, preaching, observing the Lord’s Supper and giving. These five acts of worship were so ingrained in us that when the pandemic started influencing the way we conducted worship (even having to do it online) we did everything we could to incorporate them into each of our gathering. Interestingly, we were able to address four of the five without much trouble – but the most challenging was “giving”. When we are separated from each other how do we follow through with Paul’s direction, “On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.” (I Corinthians 16:2)? Today is a special day for me.  While the official Law Enforcement Memorial Day is May 15, the Law Enforcement Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on the evening of May 13.  It is true that people from all around the country honor the Law Enforcement Community on the 15 th – and many people gather in our nation’s capital to mark the event – it is in the quiet somberness that I find the most heartfelt emotion.  People gather together on the National Mall to hear a roll call of the names of our heroes and light candles in unison to remember the sacrifice these officers made for their community.  Standing there with thousands of friends, families and fans of these often unsung heroes fills my heart with joy and my soul with sadness.  Every once in a while, I will hear the name of someone connected to me, but even if they are all strangers to me, there is a relationship.  I have been blessed to have a connection to the police world for thirty years now and...
