This is a time of year when many of our young people are finishing up their school years.  For some, it is the annual trek into the sun and fun of summer, but for a certain group, this year is special.  Those who are graduating seniors – either in high school or college – are facing something new and (hopefully) exciting.  Graduation is one very special step in our journey to full-fledged maturity.  It is the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another.  

I am sure that those who are graduating have been inundated with advice – some solicited, others probably not-so-much – but if you will indulge me, I would like to make a very simple suggestion.  The key to true success is to just do the right thing.  It’s not always easy to do what we should do … and there are times it might come with a price … but, we will never be embarrassed by being righteous.  For the most part, we can figure out the right thing to do, but if we ever have a question, the Word of God should never be too far away from us.  In fact, it has never been easier to stay connected to the Bible – it is readily available in multiple formats on our devices.

Our best to those of you making the transition of a lifetime.  We hope you will find heath and happiness.

I grew up in a faith tradition that asserted there are five acts of worship that should be conducted during our worship services: singing, praying, preaching, observing the Lord’s Supper and giving. These five acts of worship were so ingrained in us that when the pandemic started influencing the way we conducted worship (even having to do it online) we did everything we could to incorporate them into each of our gathering. Interestingly, we were able to address four of the five without much trouble – but the most challenging was “giving”. When we are separated from each other how do we follow through with Paul’s direction, “On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.” (I Corinthians 16:2)? Today is a special day for me.  While the official Law Enforcement Memorial Day is May 15, the Law Enforcement Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on the evening of May 13.  It is true that people from all around the country honor the Law Enforcement Community on the 15 th – and many people gather in our nation’s capital to mark the event – it is in the quiet somberness that I find the most heartfelt emotion.  People gather together on the National Mall to hear a roll call of the names of our heroes and light candles in unison to remember the sacrifice these officers made for their community.  Standing there with thousands of friends, families and fans of these often unsung heroes fills my heart with joy and my soul with sadness.  Every once in a while, I will hear the name of someone connected to me, but even if they are all strangers to me, there is a relationship.  I have been blessed to have a connection to the police world for thirty years now and...
