Unless you are new to these posts there are a couple of things you probably know about me.  First, I am a baseball fan … and secondly, I am a Texas Rangers baseball fan.  Up until a couple of years ago, it was tempting to feel like my support was in vain, but the World Series Title in 2023 helped make most of the bleak times bearable.  So, when the Rangers come to my area, you will find me somewhere in the stands.  I will be somewhat subtle in my attire, but I will have something on that will show my allegiance and when things go our way, you might even hear a quite little “golf clap”.   The Rangers are in Nationals Park this weekend, so be looking for me somewhere in the stands.

One of the great things about sports is the fans.  We have our favorites – and are willing to show our support in the good times and the bad.  As I thought about this, I see a parallel in our spiritual lives as well.  Have you ever wondered why people go to church?  Well, there are a variety of reasons, but one of them is to show whose team we’re on.  When we attend worship, we let the world know we are on God’s team. 

What are you planning on doing this weekend?  Why not make the effort to show your spiritual colors.  It is more than a pep rally, but it might give us encouragement to make it through our week.

Sometimes words just don’t seem to make sense.  Take today, for example.  Many people call the Friday before Easter “Good Friday”; but how on earth could there be anything good about it?  After being rejected by some of His closest disciples, “When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.” (Luke 23:33).  Within a matter of a few hours, the perfect Son of God would be dead – executed for the sins of mankind!  It would take deception, hatred and evil to make it happen; but they got it done.  How could anything good come out of that? Since baseball season is officially off and running, I thought it was time for a quote by one of the great minds of baseball – Yogi Berra.  Now before we open up the words of wisdom, I want to remind you about the guy.  Berra wasn’t just some ballplayer, he was elected to the Hall of Fame – not as a “character” but as a star.  As a career New Yorker, he had a batting average of .285 and hit over 350 home runs.  He was an 18-time All-Star and won ten World Series Championships as a player and three as a coach.  Not bad for a kid who grew up in The Hill in St. Louis.  Yet, maybe one of the least known facts about him was that he was married to his wife, Carmen for 65 years.  (Maybe that qualifies them for the Marriage Hall of Fame.)
