Twenty-five years ago, my week was beginning to get busy.  Our community was preparing for a couple of significant celebrations over the upcoming weekend and I was about to have to adjust my schedule to fit the demands.  I was about to have to go out of my way to do my job – and then all of a sudden, our world changed!  In a matter of moments on that Tuesday morning, our nation was turned upside down and even our smaller community thousands of miles away from the east coast was impacted.

As I think about the events surrounding Tuesday; September 11, 2001 a lot of things come to mind; but one of the more pragmatic is that we can do all the planning we want to do, but life doesn’t always follow a script.  Just because we plan doesn’t mean that it will play out the way we expect.  I think there are a couple of lessons we can learn from this:  First, while we should make future plans, let’s not get so wrapped up in them that they overwhelm life for us.  Sure, circumstances might happen; but, then again, they may not.  Let’s make plans but don’t become overrun by them.  Second, let’s do our best to be flexible.  Life is fluid and we need to be able to adjust.  Again, planning can help, but it’s not necessarily the final answer.

Let’s prepare for the potential future, but let’s not be preoccupied by it.  Let’s live life as it plays out, not just the plans we make for it.

Friday; October 31

This is big weekend for many of us.   First, tonight many people will be participating in Halloween activities.   If this is something you do, please be careful and wise.   Watch out for yourselves as well as for your children.   Yet, there is something else happening this weekend – we get to turn our clocks back an hour tomorrow night (or I guess you could get up at 2:00 a.m. and change your clocks if you don’t have anything better to do).   There has been a lot of debate about why we change time – and if we should do it anymore – but, at least for most of us, we’ll do it at least one more time.   The questions about gaining and losing an hour have been increasing over the years and I don’t know how much longer we’ll find value in it; however, there is another question that I think is more pressing.   What are we doing with the days we have been given?   Eventually, the hour we “lose” in the spring, we will regain in the autumn, but the days we...

Wednesday; April 1

Okay, it is time for my annual tirade about how much I dislike April Fools Day.  First of all, I am not a big fan of practical jokes; but maybe more importantly, I think a day dedicated to misrepresenting the truth is a bad idea.  I get it, it’s fun to twist the truth for a day, the problem is that this has become the norm; not something done just on April 1 st .  Maybe if we dedicated ourselves to preserving the truth the other 364 days of the year, I would be more apt to enjoy a day dedicated to fun and games, but folks, we have a continuing veracity problem.  It seems like every day has become dedicated to trying to fool other people.  Years ago, a Middle Eastern ruler named Pilate asked the age-old question, “What is truth?” (John 18:38) and we have taken the last several centuries wondering the same thing.  Unfortunately, a more pressing question has become “Who can we deceive?”.  As people around us stretch (or just outright ignore) the truth, ...
