There are a lot of memorable names in the Bible, but Euodia and Syntyche may not be at the top of the list – however, they are forever linked throughout history.  When the Apostle Paul writes to a friend of his he notes, “I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to live in harmony in the Lord. Indeed, true companion, I ask you also to help these women who have shared my struggle in the cause of the gospel, together with Clement also and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the book of life.” (Philippians 4:2-3).  I have to admit that these two women have been targets throughout Christian history, but I want us to take a break for just a second and consider another aspect of this admonition.  Sure, they could have done better to get along, but notice that Paul doesn’t write them off.  They had been allies of his and had done their part to advance the Christian cause.  He wasn’t willing to let one bump in their road detour their journey.

When we see people struggling, what do we do?  Are we quick to condemn them – and negate the positive influence they have had – or do we have a desire to help them get back on the right route.  Sure it is easy to identify struggles, but with the right guidance, these challenges can be footnotes in history rather than becoming the main story itself.  Let’s help – not hinder – good people who might need a gentle nudge back on track rather than a push off the cliff.
