If you have spent much time studying the outsides, you have probably heard of John Muir.  The Scottish-born naturalist made a name for himself in the United States – especially in the western part of the country.  There are many aspects of Muir’s life but one that strikes me is his willingness to explore.  He seemed to appreciate this great big wonderful world.  In fact, one of his quotes affirms, “The world's big and I want to have a good look at it before it gets dark.”. 

As I read that quote the other day, I was struck by it – not just as an encouragement to get off the couch and go hike in the woods – but to challenge me to experience as much as I can about life.  It is easy to sit in the safety of my home, but what am I missing by not exploring?  It is comfortable to read what I like, but what have I missed by not expanding my library?  It is easy to hang out with my closely guarded (and chosen) friends and family, but who have I missed that could make my life more interesting. 

Each one of us has a limited number of days on the face of this earth before our lives go dark.  Are we willing to go exploring?  Are we willing to venture out into the outside world or expand our thoughts to find something new?  Let’s take the time we have to go out and have a good look around.

Thursday; November 6

It was on this date in 1860 that Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States.  Interestingly, it would just be one year later, on November 6, 1861, that Jefferson Davis was elected president of the divided states of America.  Within one year the Southern States not only created their own nation, they selected their own leadership.  As I look back on these events, I am reminded of how quickly things can change.  I realize that the COVID pandemic was not nearly at the level of the Civil War, but think back on how much things changed between April, 2019 and April 2020!  We live in a fast-paced society that can change on us in a hurry. Through the years I have preached a lot of “bear one another burdens”.   This phrase from Galatians 6:2 has been a launching pad for a lot of my sermons and lessons.   Now, before I move on, let me make it plain that I am still a big believer in this admonition; however, I have learned something along the way.   Often, to be able to help people we need to communicate with them.   When we see people struggling, we have to be willing to ask them what’s going on – and then listen to them.   If we wonder why people have changed, we need to ask them and patiently await their honest response.   Often, helping comes by beginning an investigation and often requires listening to commentary.   There have been times in my life when I have shied away from this pursuit of truth, but I am trying to learn that with genuine care for others difficult discussions don’t have to be that tough.
