Have you ever heard (or said), “I just don’t understand how people can do things like that!”?  There are times when we watch someone mistreat others or do horrific acts and we just don’t get it.  While we say this with a sense of frustration, in all honesty, that’s not a bad thing.  Us not being able to fathom the evils people do is natural and laudable.  In all honesty, I would be worried about you – and me – if our minds could fathom the evil people do! 

I think one of the reasons we can’t understand why people are evil is that we have put that type of thinking behind us.  We think with a different set of morals than those who live such a debased lifestyle.  Interestingly, as Christians, we are challenged to expand our ignorance of the world, “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:1-3).  Let’s be pleased with ourselves when we can’t comprehend the world around us because it means that we have been transformed to a new (and better) way of thinking and living.

Today is a special day for me.  While the official Law Enforcement Memorial Day is May 15, the Law Enforcement Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on the evening of May 13.  It is true that people from all around the country honor the Law Enforcement Community on the 15 th – and many people gather in our nation’s capital to mark the event – it is in the quiet somberness that I find the most heartfelt emotion.  People gather together on the National Mall to hear a roll call of the names of our heroes and light candles in unison to remember the sacrifice these officers made for their community.  Standing there with thousands of friends, families and fans of these often unsung heroes fills my heart with joy and my soul with sadness.  Every once in a while, I will hear the name of someone connected to me, but even if they are all strangers to me, there is a relationship.  I have been blessed to have a connection to the police world for thirty years now and...

Are you having a tough day today?  If so, why?  What has gotten you so wound up that you can’t relax and rejoice?  On those days when I have a bad day, I am finding that the cause is often something outside my control.  Maybe it is an argument between co-workers.  There are times it is a news story that has captured my attention.  As trivial as it seems, it might even be the fact that my favorite team is in a losing streak.  You know, there are times when it doesn’t seem to take much to suck the life out of me.  Now, while this may seem to be rather simplistic, I think there is some positive news.  You see, if it is something this simple that can make me feel bad, shouldn’t it also be true that something simple just might be able to pull me out of the doldrums.  If we are facing a bad day (not one of those terrible, horrible, no good very bad days … just a bad day), could it be that we just need something to turn it around?  As I wa...

Unless you are new to these posts there are a couple of things you probably know about me.   First, I am a baseball fan … and secondly, I am a Texas Rangers baseball fan.   Up until a couple of years ago, it was tempting to feel like my support was in vain, but the World Series Title in 2023 helped make most of the bleak times bearable.   So, when the Rangers come to my area, you will find me somewhere in the stands.   I will be somewhat subtle in my attire, but I will have something on that will show my allegiance and when things go our way, you might even hear a quite little “golf clap”.    The Rangers are in Nationals Park this weekend, so be looking for me somewhere in the stands.
