        Not long ago, I was reminded of an adage I have grown up with.  I am sure that when I originally heard “ignorance is bliss” I didn’t understand it.  In fact, I might have been a bit upset because I was probably pretty ignorant of life at the time.  Were people making fun of me?  Yet, the older I have gotten, the more I understand the concept that with more knowledge and wisdom comes more headaches and heartaches.  It can be easier not knowing what we don’t know that we don’t know.  (I hope that makes sense.)  However, the tradeoff between ignorance and wisdom is that it is only through maturity that we can really help others and make a difference in our world.  Being clueless can make my life easier, but the stress that comes with insight makes us and others better.

          Many of us possess a sense of knowledge and wisdom – what are we doing with it?  Are we ignoring it so we can “veg out” and not be accountable or are we embracing our roles as leaders and helping those around us come to a better understanding of life.  No, growing mature isn’t for the faint of heart, but if we embrace it, we can enhance the lives and futures of the people around us and those who will come after us.

Today is a special day for me.  While the official Law Enforcement Memorial Day is May 15, the Law Enforcement Candlelight Vigil is traditionally held on the evening of May 13.  It is true that people from all around the country honor the Law Enforcement Community on the 15 th – and many people gather in our nation’s capital to mark the event – it is in the quiet somberness that I find the most heartfelt emotion.  People gather together on the National Mall to hear a roll call of the names of our heroes and light candles in unison to remember the sacrifice these officers made for their community.  Standing there with thousands of friends, families and fans of these often unsung heroes fills my heart with joy and my soul with sadness.  Every once in a while, I will hear the name of someone connected to me, but even if they are all strangers to me, there is a relationship.  I have been blessed to have a connection to the police world for thirty years now and...

Are you having a tough day today?  If so, why?  What has gotten you so wound up that you can’t relax and rejoice?  On those days when I have a bad day, I am finding that the cause is often something outside my control.  Maybe it is an argument between co-workers.  There are times it is a news story that has captured my attention.  As trivial as it seems, it might even be the fact that my favorite team is in a losing streak.  You know, there are times when it doesn’t seem to take much to suck the life out of me.  Now, while this may seem to be rather simplistic, I think there is some positive news.  You see, if it is something this simple that can make me feel bad, shouldn’t it also be true that something simple just might be able to pull me out of the doldrums.  If we are facing a bad day (not one of those terrible, horrible, no good very bad days … just a bad day), could it be that we just need something to turn it around?  As I wa...

It is hard to watch what is going on in Texas right now.  With the number of confirmed dead and scores more unaccounted for, our hearts hurt with all the pain and devastation.  In an effort to wrap our heads around something as horrific as this, we try to come to grips with what is going on.  Are we in the end times?  Is the Lord trying to teach us something?  While it is natural to try to make logical sense out of what is going on, I believe one of the comforting things we can do is understand this isn’t unusual for life on earth.  Now hear me out, if you have lost someone in this tragedy (or any tragedy), I am not trying to diminish your pain and anguish.  However, what I am trying to say is that life on earth is fraught with danger.  It doesn’t take much of a review of history to see this.  On this day in 1981, 114 people killed in the collapse of the skyway of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City.  About this time of year in 1972 H...
