What cements our
relationship with God? It is tempting to
believe that the more powerful and mighty we become in the Lord’s army, the
more of an impact we will have and the closer we can get to our King. While this might make human sense, this
concept tends to promote the idea that God really needs us doing His will for
Him to be successful. Folks, our God –
the Almighty – is not impressed by what we can do! If He needed someone or something to be
successful in the war between good and evil, there are a lot more powerful
beings than we could ever become. So,
what sets us apart? As I was reading
through Matthew 5 (the Sermon on the Mount) lately, I noticed something
interesting. Jesus taught that spiritual
sonship comes from a couple of unlikely talents. First, it is available through making peace,
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
(Matthew 5:9). Second, it comes through
love, “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who
persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in
heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil
and the good, and sends rain on the righteous
and the unrighteous.” (Matthew 5:44-45).
Are we looking to be an
asset for the Lord and make a difference in the world? Maybe we should focus on the “softer side” of
spirituality.
