Not long ago, I was watching a television program that featured an example of a satirical snippet of a religious discussion.  Upon reflection of their beliefs one person told the other, “I do not object to the concept of a deity, but I am baffled by the notion of one that takes attendance.”.  While this seems to smack in the face of traditional religion, in kind of a backwards way, I get it.  If we are going to worship an awesome God, why would we want to serve one who cares if we showed up on Sunday mornings?  In other words, if God is as great as He claims to be (which I believe He is) why would His ego need to be stroked by whether we (His creation) showed up to worship Him?  If He knows He is sovereign, why does He care what we think about Him?  Now hear me out on this … I am saying I understand the confusion – not that I agree with the rationale.  You see, while there is something to the concept of God’s creation honoring the God who created them, sometimes I think we need to keep in mind that we are the ones who need the strength from worship.  He doesn’t need our affirmation; we need His strength.

From the beginning of the Christian church there has been a call for believers to gather together in worship to Him – not because He needs us but because we need Him.  The early believers were told, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.”  (Hebrews 9:23-25).  Folks, we need to make sure we are regularly present in a service dedicated to God because we need it!

What do you have planned for this weekend?  If we are looking for a way to reinforce our spiritual nature, we just might find it being reinforced by a gathering of like-minded believers!

Think About It!
