What happens when religion meets social adjustment?  Typically, when the church comes face to face with a changing society, it is religion that tends to give in.  To remain “contemporary” we tend to give in and allow society to morph it into what it wants us to be.  Unfortunately, that isn’t good for either one of us.  By giving into revised social demands, religion loses its integrity.  By overpowering religion, society tends to veer further and further away from where it should be.  If society was better than religion, this might be okay; but all too often, that isn’t the case.

While we face these challenges in the 21st Century, we aren’t the first to face or the first to be warned about it.  Centuries ago, an early Christian writer challenged his contemporaries, “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.” (Jude 3).  While we need to be able to relate to each and every generation, Christians cannot abandon the truth.  The great thing about godliness is that it is contemporary in every society, but we have to make sure we stand firm and let the truth speak for itself.

Let’s not get hoodwinked by people who tell us religion needs to change.  Let’s allow godly religion to have a positive impact on our society.
