What does it take to be right with God? What do we need to do to make sure that we stay in God’s good graces? There are several correct answers to these questions, but one that we might not expect is “humility”. Sure, we see the value in obedience and maybe even in aggressive evangelism, but humility is often overlooked. The ability to properly see where we fit in the world is one of my favorite definitions of being humble because I believe it helps us to not overstate our worth or underappreciate our value. By having the ability to accurately understand the role we play in serving God and leading others, we are able to feel comfortable in the role we have been called to play. Humility allows us to overcome thinking too much of ourselves and too little of ourselves.
When Jesus addressed those who sought to be His disciples, one of the first thing He told them was to exude humility. The first Beatitude on the Sermon on the Mount teaches, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 5:3). The phrase “poor in spirit” indicates to me the quality of humility – a humility that allows believers to feel comfortable in their skin and, therefore, enabling them to enjoy God’s world. Arrogance can produce haughtiness, but modesty translates into the ability to enjoy the talents we have been given without being self-abasing.
If we want to have a balanced life, let’s recognize the value of humility. When we do, the whole world will begin to make more sense.
