One of the challenges of maturity is viewing things through a new set of lenses.  As we are coming of age, we learn our own personal preferences and grow confident in being able to make choices based on our likes.  While it is important to feel comfortable in our own skin and self-assured with our personal choices, there comes a point in time when our desires will need to take a backseat to the needs and desires of others.  Part of leadership and development is a willingness to set aside what we want to do and assist others as they promote their own wants and needs.  Good leaders and mentors are able to step back and allow others their time to shine. While this may sound a little bit like pop psychology, it also has a biblical base.  The New Testament admonishes us, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” (Philippians 2:3-4).  Not only is this humility, it is also an element of leadership. 

Is it time for us to step back and begin supporting the decisions of others?  More often than not, there will be plenty of time for us to do what we want; so when we get the chance to help others pursue their preferences it is a win/win when we give in.

Friday; October 31

This is big weekend for many of us.   First, tonight many people will be participating in Halloween activities.   If this is something you do, please be careful and wise.   Watch out for yourselves as well as for your children.   Yet, there is something else happening this weekend – we get to turn our clocks back an hour tomorrow night (or I guess you could get up at 2:00 a.m. and change your clocks if you don’t have anything better to do).   There has been a lot of debate about why we change time – and if we should do it anymore – but, at least for most of us, we’ll do it at least one more time.   The questions about gaining and losing an hour have been increasing over the years and I don’t know how much longer we’ll find value in it; however, there is another question that I think is more pressing.   What are we doing with the days we have been given?   Eventually, the hour we “lose” in the spring, we will regain in the autumn, but the days we...

Wednesday; July 16

It is hard to watch what is going on in Texas right now.  With the number of confirmed dead and scores more unaccounted for, our hearts hurt with all the pain and devastation.  In an effort to wrap our heads around something as horrific as this, we try to come to grips with what is going on.  Are we in the end times?  Is the Lord trying to teach us something?  While it is natural to try to make logical sense out of what is going on, I believe one of the comforting things we can do is understand this isn’t unusual for life on earth.  Now hear me out, if you have lost someone in this tragedy (or any tragedy), I am not trying to diminish your pain and anguish.  However, what I am trying to say is that life on earth is fraught with danger.  It doesn’t take much of a review of history to see this.  On this day in 1981, 114 people killed in the collapse of the skyway of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City.  About this time of year in 1972 H...
