I am a big advocate for Solomon’s adage, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). While we might try to convince ourselves that mankind is creating new ways to do evil, in all honesty it’s probably happened before. While this might prompt us to be depressed, I do believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You see, if what we are experiencing today has happened in the past that means that mankind lived through it before; therefore, there is hope for us to deal with it today. As I thought about this, I was reminded of a warning from several centuries ago, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight!” (Isaiah 5:20-21). It doesn’t take us too long to see that there are people out in our world who have their philosophy of life backwards. They are living and teaching things that seem to be 180 degrees from the way believers see them. While this can be discouraging, I think there are a couple of positive things we can take away from this observation. First, we are not the first generation to experience it and that reminds us that the world is not too far gone that it is destined for absolute destruction. Additionally, when we find ourselves at odds with the world, we shouldn’t be surprised. There have always been and always will be people who advocate things that are in opposition to God’s teachings. We don’t need to be ashamed of what we teach, nor should we back down from the truth. We are continuing the good fight that started a long time ago!
Let’s not grow weary in our quest for righteousness. We come from a long line of spiritual warriors who were willing to take a stand in a world that always seems to be upside down.
