After many years of
inactivity, I am picking up my golf clubs again. Well, let me rephrase that – I am pulling out
the new clubs Jeane and our children gave me.
I am excited about my renewed interest in the game. I have played off and on during various
seasons of my life and I (and they) think it’s time to give it another
try. Now, the reason I share this with
you is to relate a couple of lessons I have learned in the process. First of all, I can’t expect to pick up my
clubs after years (decades) of inactivity and expect to be proficient. Yet maybe the biggest lesson is that I will
have to learn to play “old man’s golf”.
I was never a long hitter, but now that I have gotten more gray hair, I
can’t expect to hit the ball as far as a used to. The great thing about golf is that you can be
successful even if you aren’t a monster driver.
The important thing is to play within your strengths and keep the ball
in the fairway. I am actually kind of
looking forward to golf at this stage of life – maybe I’ll see more manicured
grass and less of woods and water!
As we age, we may have to adjust to be successful. It can be frustrating to realize we aren’t what (or who) we used to be; but that doesn’t mean that we are failures. In theory, wisdom should come with age and the ability to adapt should be part of that wisdom. Are we looking to remain relevant? Maybe it’s time we make some adjustments that keep us on the path to success.
Think About It!
