Now that we are about a
week into the Major League Baseball season, it is time for another Yogism. For those of us who are growing older, we
can’t imagine it but there are some people who might not remember Yogi – not
Yogi Bear of cartoon fame, but Yogi Berra of the Hall of Fame. While some of Yogi’s talents have faded with
time, his famous witticisms have withstood the test of time. I recently came across one that made me smile
and scratch my head at the same time: “In theory there is no difference between
theory and practice. In practice there
is.”. When I first saw this, I had to
reread it, and I am glad I did. In kind
of an odd way, Yogi identified a truism that many of us miss. You see, too much of life is lived in
perception. We talk about what could be
or even what should be, but the proof is in what “is”. Potential and theory are great places to
start, but it is action and follow-through that offers real proof.
Let’s take the time to
plan for life but let’s not leave the possibilities on the planning board. Not only are unfulfilled theories void, but
they can also be annoying. If we just
plan and never get around to action, we can grow frustrated and we might just
end up giving up before we really get started.
Do we have theories of what we hope to accomplish? Are we putting them into practice?
Think About It!
