When we landed in Richmond the other afternoon, we arrived about the same time as some sailors who had recently flown in from Chicago.  As I looked at their faces (and the packs they toted) it appeared they had just gotten out of boot camp and may have been on their way to their first sea tour.  The first thing I thought about them was how young they looked.  They could have literally been my grandchildren!  Yet, as I thought about them, I was struck by another emotion – pride.  They were part of a next generation of citizens who are willing to stand guard over us.  No political party or national regime is going to get it completely right, but it does my heart good to see men and women who are willing to think outside their own motives and serve for the good of our citizens.  As I walked past the fresh-faced (and confused) service people, I was encouraged that they were entering a career of public service, but also a bit concerned for their safety.  I hope they all serve out their time and are able to return to their friends and family unscathed – physically, emotionally and spiritually.

As I thought about this desire for them, I came across a passage that found Paul challenging the early Christians, “Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” (I Corinthians 16:13).  No, I do not know their names or even their mission, but in some way I hope they will be inspired by my thoughts for them.

Do you know of someone who is heading out on their own kind of mission?  It might not be a bad thing to remind them of Paul’s words.  Even as some of our generation are rotating out of service, there are others who are willing to go to bat for our nation or our church.  Whether you are just beginning or are reaching the end of your service, remember that you are not alone.  You carry with you our hope for success and the power of the One who will never forsake you.

          Think About It!
