Wednesday; October 15
On this date in 1989
Wayne Gretzky broke the NHL’s all-points record.
Now, I have a confession to make … I am not sure exactly what that
means. I grew up in the South before hockey
came to Florida and Texas, so about all I knew about spots on ice was the 1967 “Ice
Bowl” where those Green Bay Packers beat my Dallas Cowboys. However, even
though I don’t know much about hockey, I know that The Great One was really
good and what he accomplished was incredible.
Now, even though I wasn’t a fan of his ability, I do like some of Gretzky’s
observations. One of my favorites is,
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”.
I had heard this quote through the years, but I recently came across
another one, “Procrastination is one of the most common and deadliest of
diseases and its toll on success and happiness is heavy.” In other words, we aren’t going to accomplish
much if we don’t try. I understand the
concept of being judicious in our efforts, but I believe that too many of us
miss out on reaching our potential because we are afraid to try. Interestingly, those who lay back often claim
they don’t want to fail; however, how much of our success actually comes from
the lessons we learned from failure?
Is there something you feel like you want to do? Why not give it a try? Is there something you feel led to do, but you are afraid of what people might say about you? Success can only come when we try – so let’s take a shot and see what happens. Who knows, maybe we’ll reach the goal we’ve always wanted.
Think About It!
