When I was growing up,
this time of year honored the explorer, Christopher Columbus. Many of us were raised on the tales of his
quests for new lands in the last part of the 15th Century. We could remember that in 1492 Columbus
sailed the ocean blue. I am not sure
what happened to the Italian explorer who made a name for himself and the
Spanish crown – but it doesn’t appear he is as popular as he used to be. No matter what happened to Columbus, I am
still intrigued by those who go out in quest of something beyond what they
know. They have the desire to discover
and the passion to explore.
Typically, when we think
about discoverers, we envision the people whose quests are for the physical
world, but there is another type of explorers – those who try to learn
more. Their maps are the books they read,
and their conquests are the thoughts they develop. They believe there is more to their world
than what they already know, so they plow new ground. Years ago, a wise man wrote, “The mind
of the prudent acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks
knowledge.” (Proverbs 18:15). There may
be fewer corners of the earth to be discovered but we are only limited to what
we can learn by our willingness to dig deeper into the mines of our minds.
Think About It!
