What is a hero? I grew up in a time when a hero was defined as someone who did something super – something above and beyond the expected. In my mind, this meant someone who could leap tall buildings in a single bound. Yet, the older I get the more I realize that heroes are those who just make us feel better about ourselves and feel safer in our environment. Sure, there are some people who accomplish incredible feats; but each and every day we get to witness heroes at work. They include:
- Police officers who are awake at 2:00 a.m. protecting us (even if they are only noticed by the bad guys who have had their evil plans diverted)
- Dads who work the extra shift so the family can have a second vehicle that enables the children to get the chance to experience the extra-curriculars that make life a bit more enjoyable
- Teachers who facilitate summer school so that our middle schoolers who are struggling with their core subjects can catch up and graduate on time with their classmates
- The neighbor who mows our lawn when we are sick or the ones who combine our fields when we are laid up with a debilitating ailment right in the middle of harvest
- Friends who go out of their way to check on us when we are dealing with the worst news of our lives or are just having a bad day in an otherwise good week
Who are the heroes in your life? I would imagine if you called them out on it, you would be met with an “Awe, shucks, it was nothing”; but deep down inside they appreciate being noticed.
Is there someone who has gone the extra mile? Today might be a good day to thank a hero!
