Only July 29, 1983, Steve
Garvey ended a National League record consecutive games streak. At that point he had played 1207 games in a
row. That sounds pretty impressive
doesn’t it – until you think about what Cal Ripken did. The Oriole infielder played in 2632
consecutive games – that’s more than twice what Garvey accomplished. So, what do we do – do we diminish what
Garvey just because it wasn’t as impressive as what Ripken accomplished? No way!
Garvey didn’t call in sick for work for almost seven and a half
years! That’s pretty amazing in and of
itself!
I think we can learn
about life from baseball. Have you
noticed how easy it is to compare one person’s accomplishments to
another’s? Yet is that really fair? When we compare one person or feat to another,
we tend to estimate value and, in most cases the comparison is not fair or even
reasonable. What could happen if we
honored everyone’s accomplishments on their own merit? Not only will it keep us from playing
favorites, but it might even help us see the value everyone brings to whatever
they do.
Do you know someone who
could benefit from being recognized?
Let’s do them a favor by honoring what they have done based on the
action in and of itself.
Think About It!
