I have spent a lot of my adult life around First Responders.  I have an incredible respect for them and I believe I have come to have a grasp on what makes them tick.  While I have an understanding of their psyche, I also am aware of some of the things that frustrate them.  One of their challenges is how often they are called to protect people from themselves.  While many people have the ability to sit back and watch as people do silly things and live with the consequences of their actions, First Responders – either by nature or by legislation – often have to intervene.   As you might expect, there are times when people who keep making the same mistakes put themselves and, many times, their rescuers in jeopardy.  This can wear on good people who have a desire to do good things.  So, how can they – and many of the rest of us who want to help others – keep investing our lives in people who don’t seem to want to invest in themselves?  I think the Bible provides us with a good reason when we are told, “Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” (Galatians 6:9).  In essence, the more good we attempt, the more success we will have.  It can be tempting to turn our backs and walk away, but by acting we will make some kind of a difference – either to those who need our direct help or those who might be watching us and are inspired by what we do.

Let’s not grow weary.  The Lord has given us the talents and the opportunity to make a difference.

Think About It!
