Not long ago, I had the opportunity to attend a team building day.  I had a great time – not only because of the activities but spending time with friends of mine in a state park that had woods and water.  (The BBQ was pretty good, too!)  One of the things that we did was get a chance to spend some time with horses.  When I originally heard about it, coming from out west, I thought we were going to ride them; but I was surprised to find out that we were going to curry them and walk around with them.  It was kind of fun, but I think I like riding them better.  Now, the reason I bring up the horses is that I am noticing a lot of emphasis placed on animal-type therapy.  I am aware of equine therapy, comfort dogs and even goat yoga.  (I need to stop here for a second and observe that I have been around several goats in my life and not once did they bring me peace.  Typically, I needed meditation to restore the peace they sucked out of me!)  Anyway, please don’t misunderstand me.  I like animals and our family has had several throughout the years; but I feel a bit disheartened that we are having to turn to the animal kingdom to find what we are missing in our human interactions.  Sure, it’s cool to cuddle with a puppy, but shouldn’t it be more fulfilling to spend time with a human being?  It’s great to get a chance to interact with a horse, but they aren’t going to be able to challenge our thinking or help us understand the more complex principles of life.  Again, I am not bashing animals or the people who enjoy spending time with them, I guess I am challenging human beings to elevate our game to become the conveyors of comfort and support we should be!

Near the beginning of the Christian church, they were told that they needed to provide love and support to one another.  In fact, one church was complimented, “Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing.” (I Thessalonians 5:11).  Are we living the kind of lives that brings peace to those around us?  Let’s live in such a way that humans seek peace through us, not need to find it because of us.

Think About It!
