When the Lord reflected on godly worship in Jerusalem following their Jewish re-occupation of Judea, He noticed that something was missing. Those who had come back to their homeland seemed to be missing the point of their worship. Whether it was in their sacrifices or their tithes, they weren’t doing what they should have been doing. Interestingly, as the Lord addressed their lapses, He not only chided them for what they weren’t doing, He also told them that they were missing out on blessings. After warning them of the curse they were facing He stated, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” (Malachi 3:10). Their negligence wasn’t just annoying Him, it was also limiting them.
While we don’t have the same style of worship today, I wonder if we aren’t facing a similar dilemma. Sure, it is easy to see how we might irritate God by not worshipping Him as He would like, but being displeasing to Him is just one of the issues. When we don’t invest ourselves as fully as we can into our worship with Him, we leave blessings on the table. By not doing what we should, we don’t receive what we could.
This weekend, let’s make a concerted effort to renew the spiritual nature of our worship. By making it a point to attend a service dedicated to Him and preparing our hearts to fellowship with Him and His people, we will take away more than a spiritual checkmark, we open up our lives to the unimaginable blessings of the Supreme God of the universe! Let’s not miss out on that.
Think About It!
