The other morning I was driving to work listening to a gospel music show on the Bluegrass Channel when I heard the song, “Broad Minded” by the Louvin Brothers.  Basically, the song lamented how, in the interest of progression, we have gotten soft on sin.  The catchy phrase of the song basically says, “The word broadminded is spelled s-i-n.”  I realize that in our modern society we like to think of ourselves as forward thinking, but there are times when we can get too far ahead of ourselves … or even of our Lord.  In an effort to accommodate different kinds of people and different kinds of lifestyles, we tend to erase boundaries.  Modern society has done its best to convince us that it is bad manners to try to restrict any behavior; but the truth of the matter is that there are some things that are just flat-out wrong.  There is s-i-n in the world.  Interestingly, this is not something that is just from our modern times.  Charlie and Ira (the Louvin Brothers) recorded their song back in the early 1950s – but even that composition is modern compared to something that the Old Testament prophet, Isaiah, wrote back in his day.  The spokesman for the Lord observed, “Woe to those who call good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20).  Honestly, this has been an issue from the beginning of time.  Remember that satan challenged Eve’s assessment of eating the forbidden fruit by telling her, “You surely will not die! For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:4-5).  Deception is alive and well in modern days – but it’s not our creation!

Let’s be wise in our assessment of good and evil.  No, not everything that is considered progressive is wrong, but some of them are and should be called “sin”.  Let’s rely on God’s Word to lead us away from the broad ways and keep us on the straight and narrow.

Think About It!
