When Jesus was demonstrating just how far He was willing to go to serve His disciples He did something rather unusual. As Jesus was living, figuratively, in the shadow of the cross, He “… got up from supper, and laid aside His garments; and taking a towel, He girded Himself. Then He poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.” (John 13:4-5). Within the next twenty-four hours Jesus would pay the ultimate price for the forgiveness for mankind, but He seemed to prepare His disciples for this historic event by washing their feet.

When I think about this act of service, I have a request for you – please don’t wash my feet. (I imagine you are happy to hear that, too!) If you are looking for a way to let me know that you care about me; listen to me when I am hurting or troubled ... gently show me a better way ... share your smile when I look anxious ... respect my social and political opinions ... ask me how I am doing – then listen to my answer ... or just send an encouraging email for no particular reason. You don’t need to wash my feet!

I believe we tend to miss the impact of Jesus’ action when we focus on feet-washing and miss out on the message of service. Jesus was willing to do what He could for the people He cared about. Do we have that same spirit?

Think About It!
