In his most recent book, Simon Sinek discusses what he calls “The Infinite Game”. Basically, he challenges his readers to search for a higher calling by approaching life (and business) with a mind toward continual advancement, not just wins and losses. If we are going to be truly successful, we need to be a part of an ongoing journey that elevates beyond tangible (finite) measurements. As a part of his discussion, he differentiates between pursuing being the “best” and being “better”. Even if we achieve becoming the “best” at something (which is as much arbitrary as it is unlikely) being the best is not a permanent state. To be successful, we can’t stop at being the best, we must keep moving forward and upward. Sinek observes, “’Better’ suggests a journey of constant improvement and makes us feel like we are invited to contribute our talents and energies to make progress in that journey. ‘Better’, in the Infinite Game, is better than “best.”
What is our goal in life? Are we selling ourselves short striving merely to be the best at what we do? Are we shooting too low when we set our eyes to landing at the top of the heap? Sure, we should strive to do our best, but when we continually play the game with a desire to become better we can’t help but be successful.

Think About It!
