In his book, “Uncommon: Finding Your Path To Significance”, Tony Dungy spends a lot of time writing about what it means to be a man in modern society. While most of the principles apply to all people, his point is that men – especially spiritually minded men – need to make sure we are doing what we have been called to do to live a life of significance. One of the points Dungy makes is that men need to be involved in their families. In essence, the key to being a father isn’t the physical ability to produce an offspring, it is the desire to be a part of a family. Being present when a child is conceived isn’t the measure of quality fathers, it is being there for them throughout their lifetimes. Dungy goes on to talk about the positive example he had in his father and desire he has to pass this quality on to his sons.

As I read this section of his book, my mind immediately went to Roger Brown – my son-in-law’s father. As parents of a daughter, our hope was for her to find someone who would be an asset to her life and Amanda found that in her husband. After spending time with Aaron’s father, it is easy to see Roger’s positive influence on him. We are blessed to have Aaron in our family – he is a great father and wonderful son-in-law – but we are also thankful for the lessons that his father taught him. The legacy of good fatherhood was passed from one generation to another and our family (in fact, our society) is better because of them.
During this Thanksgiving week, I am grateful for all the spiritually minded men who have inspired me and have made a significant influence in our society. Thank you for what you do. You are making a difference!

Think About It!
