Last week I went with my daughter and grandson to the Law Enforcement Museum in Washington D. C.  As I walked around the building I was intrigued by the historical artifacts I saw (some of which I used in my 30 year connection with Law Enforcement), but it was the stories that really struck a chord with me.  Looking around, I was reminded of the everyday heroes who risked their lives to keep us safe.  I had heard many of the stories – and I even knew some of the people – memorialized by the exhibits so, even though there was some sadness, there was also a spirit of honor that encouraged me.  I am not a military guy, so my heroes have been those who wore a badge on their blue, tan and green uniforms.

Most of us have some kind of heroes, but maybe the most unsung are those who provided us with a spiritual legacy.  Many of them went about doing good unnoticed.  Some were honored for their service and some died for the cause.  As I think back on these individuals of faith, I draw strength from their commitment.  One of the New Testament writers tried to explain their influence by writing, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2).

Do you have a favorite spiritual influence?  Let’s do them proud by learning from their ways and passing on their legacy to the next generation of believers.

Think About It!
