I know there are some Chiefs and Eagles fans out there who have been anxiously looking forward to this weekend for a while.  This Sunday is Super Bowl Sunday!  Through the years I have had my teams in the Big Game – and have even rooted for a few who won the Championship.  It’s exciting as it is happening and fulfilling when the final whistle blows.  For those of you who care more about the game than the guacamole or commercials, I hope your team does you proud! 

Americans have come to embrace Super Bowl Sunday in the last few years, but there was another Sunday that makes the one centered on a ballgame pale in comparison.  The New Testament writer, Luke, describes it this way, “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.” (Luke 24:1-3).  No offense to the NFL, but that Sunday is really the Super Sunday!  Over the last several decades we have come up with various ways to celebrate the day that hosts the NFL Championship game, but as we prepare for this weekend, let’s make sure we honor the greatest Sunday of all times – the one on which Jesus was raised – by taking a portion of our day to worship Him.  No, the glitz and glamor of our worship may not have as much pizzazz as Sunday’s halftime show … but no one will be able to outshine the One who won the ultimate victory on that day!

There are very few people who don’t know the moral of Jesus’ parable about the Good Samaritan. In fact, the phrase has become a common description of everyday people doing good to their neighbors. The other day I was watching a television show that used a rather common term applied to overcoming challenges. When organizations experience unexpected setbacks – especially when they lose key people – they rely upon the concept of “Next Man Up”. In essence, when our starters (or stars) go down, effective organizations rely upon their next levels to step into the vacancy. While this is an effective response, have we given much thought as to how we prepare to be the “next people up”? First, we must know our job. Even when we aren’t the primary players, we need to be preparing ourselves to be ready when we get the opportunity to shine. Second, we must do our best when we get the chance. Knowledge is important but what turns potential into talent is effort. When I was a youngster, I remember hearing about this thing called the Generation Gap. I was a little bit too young to be active in the social movements of the 1960s, but I do remember listening to the challenges the generations were experiencing way back then. Interestingly, now that I have been on both sides of the aging process, I have to admit that the Gap of the 1960s was nothing new. With the development of each generation comes conflict. The young people don’t feel like the older people understand them and the older folks tend to believe their input is being underappreciated. Too often trust is the casualty when two generations collide. The sad thing is that it doesn’t have to be this way.
