If today is Memorial Day, what are you remembering? The name of the day implies that we are reflecting on something, so what is it for you? Are you thinking about one particular soldier, sailor or airman who gave their life for our country? Are you reminiscing about all the men and women who died in defense of our nation so that we might stay free? Maybe you don’t have a close connection to the military, but you are thinking about a friend, family member or mentor who did something to influence your life but has since passed.
As I thought about Memorial Day I got to thinking about another aspect to it. What if we don’t just think about what they did, but what if we expanded it out and reflected on how what they did can influence what we do? How can the sacrifice of those service members help us be better citizens? How can those who make their mark in our lives influence us to do better? When I contemplated this, I was reminded of a passage of Scripture that called upon believers to reflect on the lives of the faithful, then challenged, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2). Speaking spiritually, looking back at those who lived inspirational lives can free us to follow in the footsteps of our Lord.
Happy Memorial Day! Please enjoy all the fun the day has come to bring, but at least don’t forget to take a few minutes to reflect on the lives of those who have had an impact on us – then, commit to using their inspiration to live better.
