For those of us who live in the Washington D.C. area, we know that Spring is upon us. First of all, we missed an hour sleep last Saturday night – and if that isn’t bad enough – the air is filling with pollen. I know a lot of people who have lived in a lot of places allergy-free, but when they moved to this area they grew to be on a first name basis with Allegra, Claritin or Zyrtec. Now, while this can be an irritation (literally and figuratively), it does bring with it the incredible colors of the season. We have a lot of beautiful flowers and trees in this area, but to me the prize of the bunch are the cherry trees, especially those around the Tidal Basin. Each year the trees turn area pink, and each year people come in droves to see them. In fact, they are such a tourist attraction that for weeks (or even months) ahead of time, you might be able to get a motel room in the city, but if you do, it will cost you!
The reason I bring this up is what it reminds me about God. We might credit nature with what happens each year, but it is God who created the process and makes sure that it continues. Cherry trees produce cherry blossoms in the springtime – always do, always will. That is God at work! The very beginning of the Bible lays the foundation for the presence and power of God in our world when it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1). Our world didn’t come about by a freak accident nor is it haphazardly held together with duct tape and bailing wire. God is its Creator and Sustainer. Go ahead to feel free to make your hotel reservations for next spring – thanks to God, you’ll get to see some incredible highlights of natural beauty!
