I like spring – I do not like pollen! For those of you who do not live along the eastern seaboard, you may think you have seen pollen, but the stuff here is second to none! When I lived out west, I feared cottonwood season, now it is that icky yellow stuff that layers over everything. Now that I have gotten that out of my system, one thing that I do like about the coming of the yellow film is that I don’t have to worry about another white layer of snow. Sure, maybe we could have another snow this late in the year, but it won’t last long! I hate to say it but the presence of the pollen reminds me that warm weather is just around the corner.
The reason I am writing about allergy season is as a reminder of the grandeur of God as seen through His creation. Yes, we have to deal with pollen every spring, but that is what produces the greens of summer and the powerful foliage of autumn. When God created the world, He did so with a perpetual plan that not only keeps the earth alive, but spotlights His wisdom, insight and power.
When the sage of the Old Testament wrote, “Also, the sun rises and the sun sets; and hastening to its place it rises there again.” (Ecclesiastes 1:5) he reminds his readers of the consistency of God’s creation. This pattern reminds us all of the plan of God. While it is great to see this play out in nature, HIs most important plan is the one that is in place that saves us all. Sure, relying on the consistency of nature can help us regulate our lives, but relying on the plan of salvation can give us hope throughout eternity.
The next time you sneeze because of nature’s pollen think about God’s plan. Not just for the seasons, but for us sinners as well.
Think About It!
