“Somebody has to do something.” When faced with a problem, have you ever heard someone say this … or maybe, have we been the ones to say it? If we are ever going to solve the problems we face, somebody has to step up and make a difference. Unfortunately, as long as everybody says somebody needs to do something, nothing will get done.
Thankfully, there are people out in our society who are doers, not just identifiers. It is easy to spot a problem, the real call is to do what needs to be done to correct it. We have enough analysts, what we need are activists! Those people who take it upon themselves to actively address an issue are the ones who are making a difference in their world. Government, religion and social agencies can identify issues; but it is individuals that solve them.
When the New Testament writer, James, assessed how things are to get done he observed, “Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.” (James 1:27). Those who care for others are the ones who make a difference.
This Thanksgiving Week, I would like to offer my gratitude to those who are on the frontlines of the issues afflicting our society. Thanks to everyone who volunteers at a food pantry, domestic violence center or homeless shelter. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to foster families, mentors and hospice care volunteers. I am grateful to each and every person who heard that “somebody should do something” and became the somebody who did it.
Think About It!
