Do we feel special? Do we feel blessed?

I think that one of the innate challenges of growing up when and where we have is that there is something unappealing about feeling like we have lived a life of advantage. Maybe it comes from our early opposition to the British Crown or the appeal of a frontier spirit, but throughout the history of American culture, there seems to be some kind of badge of honor about personally overcoming obstacles to find our own success. We want to pull ourselves up by our own bootstraps!

While it can feel fulling or inspiring to rising above our challenges, there is also something appealing to being able to enjoy the good life without having to work too hard to achieve it. Maybe this was on David’s mind when he praised God by noting, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” (Psalm 23:5-6). As believers we have been reborn into a life of honor. No, that doesn’t mean that we won’t have troubles and trials, nor does it imply that we are better than everyone else; but it does mean that God will be there caring for us and providing for us. We know that we are loved – not only by God, but by His people as well. We have faith that we can live a meaningful life and will enjoy an eternal rest after our journey in this life is complete. Sure, there will be ups and downs on earth, but because we are children of the King we don’t have worry.

Let’s work hard to make the most of the opportunities we are given, but let’s never forget that God has promised to bless us. Yes, we are special – not because of what we have done – but because of who our Father is.

Think About It!
