Harry
Truman is an interesting figure in American history. Some people like him, some people hate him,
but most of us find ourselves doing both.
One thing about him, he wasn’t afraid to say what he thought which makes
him very quotable. The other day I came
across an interesting observation made by 33rd president, “Men make
history and not the other way around. In periods where there is no leadership,
society stands still. Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize
the opportunity to change things for the better.” As I reflected on the comment, a couple of
things stood out. First, leadership is conscious
decision. It is something that must be
prepared for, leaders don’t just pop up when times get tough. Second, circumstances often produce a vacuum
that is not necessarily filled by “someone”.
There are times when things get tough and they just keep getting tougher
because good people don’t step up.
Finally, leaders aren’t just people who do something or say something,
they are people who change things for the better. In leadership, we don’t get credit for
trying, we make a mark when we do the right things.
As I
thought about this statement, I was drawn to a challenge issued to the Jewish
leader, Joshua, when the Lord called him to be a leader by saying, “Have I not
commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be
dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua
1:9). Have we been called to be leaders
during treacherous times? Maybe it is in
our homes, in our churches, in our community or at our jobs; but wherever it is
we must be willing to step forward and make things better. Remember, if the Lord calls us, He will
provide for us as well.
Think About It!
